Jeremiah Chapter 49 Part 2

Chapter 49:23-39 (Part 2)

We have another future prophecy concerning Damascus. There was a time when Damascus was heavily populated by Israelis. As we studied earlier, Aleppo, Syria was once a domain of large populations of “Jews.” These two cities have rivaled each other as to which one is the largest in Syria. They also rival each other as two which is the longest occupied major city of the world. Didn’t Saul, renamed Paul go and dwell there for a while to regain his site?

History word. Magnifier and puzzles.

WARNING! There is a significant amount of history revision going on right under our nose and few recognize it. The often used Wikipedia of the internet states as concerning Damascus: “First settled in the second millennium BC, it was chosen as the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate from 661 to 750.” First settled in the second millennium B.C.? To accept this sheds question on the ignorant about bible history. We read in Genesis 14:15 that Abraham, due to the trouble his nephew Lot seemed often to attract, pursued Lot’s captives “north of Damascus.” Abraham lived around 2,000 B.C. It had to already be there or Abraham, through the pen of Moses, would not have made mention of it as an existing city. History revisionists are at work in our lifetime. Study the Bible first.

Damascus (49:23-27) is often identified as a city-state in the Bible and other histories. 2 Samuel 8:5 tells us that David, the second king of Israel, “Struck down the Arameans (Assyrians) of Damascus.” He put this area under his and eventually Solomon’s kingships. This city-state was originally established by Asshur [or sometimes spelled Ashur, but not of the Tribe of Asher], the second son of Shem. This means that the people of Syria/Damascus as did Abraham, Isaac, then Jacob, descended from Shem (Noah’s son).

God has a reason to be directly involved in these people lives. HE appointed Shem the spiritual one of the three sons of Noah. These people of Damascus worshiped their founder as a god – Asshur. Isaiah [*chapter17] prophesied the destruction of Damascus 2700 years ago yet it continues today. We must keep in mind that we must work in God’s timetable, not the other way around. The destruction of Damascus may be at hand per the ongoing civil war(s) in Syria.

*Isaiah 17:1 tells us that Damascus will become a burned heap of rubble ceasing to exist. That has not yet happened in history. A nuclear bomb would do this and have similar results. Iran and Syria are sworn enemies of nuclear powered Israel. Yes, the Babylonians defeated and burned Damascus in 732 B.C. However, it continues to be a city. The total destruction has not yet happened. Watch the news.

Jeremiah 49:27 (people of Kedar) Kedar is a son of Ishmael therefore a grandson of Abraham through Kater’ah. He is the sixth son of the twelve sons of Ishmael (Genesis 25). Back in Jeremiah 2:10 Jeremiah challenges his fellow countrymen to “cross over to Kedar” to see if they change gods’ as Judah (and Israel in the north) is guilty of doing?

JIV NOTE: All but Philistia and Babylon being discussed by Jeremiah in chapter 49 are found in between Israel and Iran today. This is purely speculation, thus Jim’s Introspective View.  If [when] war breaks out between nuclear focused Iran who is sworn to drive Israel into the Sea, and nuclear Israel, these lands told by Jeremiah that will become desolate, burned and heaps of rubble with no occupants, sit between these two eternal enemies.

Is not verse 24 potentially a relevant spotlight today? “Damascus has become feeble and turning to panic. Anguish and pain has seized her” [NIV]. The process has begun.

Kedar and Hazor (49:28-33) Nebuchadnezzar did invade this territory in his conquests. In reading this scripture passage one can glean from it a future prophecy upon Kedar and “Hazor.” According to the Book of Joshua, Hazor was the seat of Jabin, a powerful Canaanite king who led a Canaanite confederation against Joshua. He and his coalition of armies were defeated by Joshua. As with the people of Kedar, these people too descended from Ishmael. These lands will become a (NIV) “haunt of jackals, a desolate place. No one will live there; no man will dwell there.” This has NOT yet happened in history. It has to be a reference to End Time.

Jeremiah 49:34-39 (Elam) Let’s remind ourselves that Elamites also descended from Shem. Their territory is today’s western border of Iran (Persia). Once an empire in and of itself, it disintegrated to a province of Persia. It exists today on the NE shores of the Persian Gulf. Its immediate neighbor to the west is Iraq.

This prophecy to Jeremiah came from the Lord God during the reign of Zedekiah. The bow is called “the mainstay of their might.” It must mean these people were experts with bow and arrow. Similar in a way to a description given to the men from the Tribe of Benjamin, they had great accuracy with a weapon of war. Similar to what God says about his scattering of the twelve Tribes of Israel, in 49:36b it reads (NIV) “I will scatter them to the four winds and there will not be a nation where Elam’s exiles do not go.” The amazing prophecy and a bit difficult to explain is verse 38…”I (God Jehovah) will set my throne in Elam.” Other scriptures put Jesus on the throne in Jerusalem. We hesitate but want to mention, most Judeans (Benjamites) remained in Babylon after release.

However, if we accept that the covenants between God and Israel and the future covenants between Christians and Jesus are distinct, it makes sense. Jesus’s throne is in Jerusalem and God-Jehovah has his in Elam. This is not often taught by theologians. Fact is most will avoid it. Once again God promises to bring about their rerun in End Time. This is a common message throughout this chapter. What else is common is the fact these are people in this chapter descended from Shem. The ones promised nothing of the sort are the Philistines in chapter 47 and Babylonians in chapter 50. There is a Lud mentioned in Genesis 10:13; a descendant (first born) of Mizraim (Ham). But there is also a Lud who descended from Shem [Genesis 10:22].

Jeremiah – Chapter 13

Book of JeremiahNo empire, kingdom or nation has survived since the beginning of history up to and including today. However, the only nation to resurrect from the lost and gone is Israel. Autonomy lost in 620 B.C. and resurrected in 1920 but officially in 1948. I am attaching a brief history of how Israel came back into existence along with this study of Jeremiah 13. Why? Jeremiah saw a new Israel although during his life he only witnessed the existence of Judah; i.e. the Southern Kingdom of the former Nation of Israel under the reign of three kings: Saul, David, and Solomon.

Those who do not study history are bound to delete it. Others are called history revisionists. This website is dedicated to simply providing the facts, then, let the reader or student of the Word decide. Many fail to understand that the current Arab nations and the State of Israel were carved out of the Ottoman Empire after WWI (please read the appendix document per history as it really is).

Jeremiah 13 begins with God telling him to dress in the priestly order. He is told to buy a linen loin cloth (something like a pair of undershorts), put it on, wear it for a while, do NOT wash it. Then Jeremiah is told something that to us sounds odd. God said to wear these shorts for a while, then take them off and hide them in between rocks in Parah (Parath), an area near his home town of Anathoth but along the Euphrates River.

JIV NOTE an aha-moment: In medicine we know of a disease called Parathyroid tumor. It is something that can easily be remedied by surgery but if not done, it will lead to death. There may be a parallel between the name of the place Jeremiah is told to hide his loin cloth, its relative ease in correction, and its fatality if not removed. http://www.parathyroid.com/

The stubbornness of the people of Judah was an abomination to God. Earlier we studied that the people were convinced that nothing could happen to them as did their northern cousins (Kingdom of Israel).Temple.jpg After all, they had the Temple, right [Jeremiah 7:1-7]? They wanted to believe that God would protect them because it is His Temple. Jeremiah knew better. He knew that the Temple structure was not the dwelling place of God but a place of sacrifices and worship of God. Their worship of other gods made God look upon Judah as useless loin cloth. Once very close to Him but now trashed.

Verse 4-6 of chapter 13 states (CEV): “Take off the shorts. Go to Para[t]h and hide the shorts in a crack between some large rocks.” And that’s what I did. Jer 13:6  Some time later [after many days] the LORD said, “Go back and get the shorts [loin cloth].
Jeremiah observes in verse 7 that the shorts (loin cloth) “…were spoiled and it [now] good for nothing” [ESV]. As God so often does in scripture, he uses object lessons. In the New Testament they are called parables. Jeremiah 13:9-11 is summarized in v9 regarding the spoiled linen loin cloth: “Thus says the LORD: Even so will I spoil the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem…

We must note in v11 that once again God includes both Judah and Israel in his proclamation. A JIV thought… even today the Jews are looked upon in disdain as a people. Much of this self-serving attitude has been the plague they have lived with since originally entering Palestine, the Promised Land. In a very real sense, the loin cloth also depicts the sensitivity and personal closeness of his relationship with God’s Chosen People.

In 13:12, Jeremiah shifts gears. Now the comparison of [Israel and] Judah is to a jar of wine. Jeremiah tells them that “every jar will be filled with wine,” something symbolic of a good life. The people of Judah and their leadership laugh at him saying in their conceit and contempt that they are God’s Chosen.  Of course they will live the good life, they say to Jeremiah. This is not just jars of wine God is comparing to their successes and good life, but that consumption of too much strong drink makes them symbolically drunk; a people possessing no reasonable sense due to too much wine often think they are invincible and infallible. Just like the drunk in a bar or at a party, s/he can whip anyone. Neither do they care what the neighbors think. Judah has no respect for Jeremiah and no concerns about their security. They also have to fear of their neighbors. It isn’t that God will make them drunk. He will allow them to have the same confidence of a drunk; father, sons, priests, rulers, (false) prophets, daughters and mothers. (Also see Isaiah 51:17 & 63:6)

God will NOT RESCUE them this time until the 70 dispersion to Babylon is compete. As we learned in our Daniel studies, when this 70 years is past the large majority will continue in their pious ways and NOT return to their homeland. PS: Hundreds of thousands of them still live in this area: Babylon, Mesopotamia, Iran, and Iraq. What is the difference today? Many former Judeans who still live there do not even realize they are of Israeli DNA.

Verse 16 is similar to a common phrase today… “it is the eleventh hour.” God is giving his 11th hour warning for Jeremiah to carry to the people of the Kingdom of Judah. Jeremiah states “If you are too proud to listen, I will weep alone. Tears will stream from my eyes when the LORD’s people are taken away as prisoners” [CEV]. Jeremiah truly loved his country and countrymen. It was a one-sided love, but love them he did.

Let no stone be left unturned. In verse 18, God says to Jeremiah, inform the king AND the queen-mother. It sounds like King Jehoiakim may listen to the queen-mother, but history tells us neither of them followed Jeremiah’s pleas. Neither did King Zedekiah. Recall that later Nebuchadnezzar removed Jehoiakim from the throne in Jerusalem replacing him with Zedekiah. Once again to solidify the pious attitude all Judah, even after the overthrow of Jehoiakim by Nebuchadnezzar, Judeans still believed they were safe. Sin can blind a person to actualities as they continue to live in the false environment of their personal realities. It can happen to them but not to me, right?

NOTE: To those who want to keep it somewhat straight per bible names of kings and others. Jehoiakim had a son named Jeconiah. He is also known as King Jehoiachin.

Jeremiah 13:20 puts it straight and on the line yet the king and queen-mother still fail to understand. “Where is your (lovely) flock [citizens of Judah] gone” is the question posed to them? Nebuchadnezzar has emptied the cities of Judah either by captivity or scattering them by fleeing his occupation of Judah. The king is told that those he has thought to be friends of his and the Kingdom will soon be in charge over him and the kingdom.

Verse 23 is a common phrase today but few realize it comes from Jeremiah 13:23. It is by comparison the odds that Judah will listen and avoid calamity. Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots? Then also you [who] can do good who are accustomed to do evil”. God gets very blunt at this point. He says that he will “show your shame by personally lifting up the skirt of Israel and its people. In other words, they no longer have a chance at being pious, stiff necked, ceremoniously religious; have the Temple to protect them, nose in the air attitudes. All things personal will now be exposed.

“I have seen your abominations, your adulteries and neighing; your lewd whoring on the hills [and] in the field. Woe to you, O Jerusalem!”

In this sense, even though I do not recommend the CEV (Contemporary English Version) for doctrine or deep bible study, they make it clear as to what the other translations seem to avoid saying flat out.

[CEV] v26, 27: You were married to me, but you were unfaithful. You even became a prostitute by worshiping disgusting gods on hilltops and in fields.

v27:  So I’ll rip off your clothes and leave you naked and ashamed for everyone to see. You are doomed! Will you ever be worthy to worship me again?

This is far from the end of our Jeremiah study, but it is the end of both the Kingdom of Israel and Judah as recognized and independent territories. It is the reason the New Testament and Jesus the Messiah of Israel and the world is born into this world some 600 years later. Chapter 13 has three arguments against Judah.

  1. Spiritual adultery;
  2. An inordinate or excessive eagerness to worship idols;
  3. Shameless participation in pagan god-worship and orgies.

Chapter 14 discusses great and natural environmental issues design to drive Judah to the bended knee. In the meantime, read the attached that follows. It helps us to understand the issues of this world today and almost universally bad attitudes toward Israel/Judah. All is part of the End Time scenario.

LEAGUE OF NATIONS

PERMANENT MANDATES COMMISSION?

MINUTES OF THE  FIFTEENTH SESSION

Held at Geneva from October 24th to November 11th, 1927.

Does Israel occupy Palestinian’s land on the West Bank? This is what those who did not take the time to study history want us to believe and precisely what Arabs want us to understand. Israel knows better.

He who does not know history is destined to DELETE IT. The desire of so many Middle Eastern (and other) States to “wipe Israel off the map” has little to nothing to do with borders. Prior to the end of WWI most of the Arab nations we know today did not exist. Arabs were wandering bands of Bedouins and city-states under the thumb of the Ottoman Turks prior to and up to the end of WWI. (Turks are not Arabs).

What about the assignment or appointment of Middle Eastern governments, kings, and rulers? This was not by popular vote by the League of Nations after WWI, but totally influenced by geo-political faithfulness to the victors of WWI. These areas were a mix of people, tribes, religions, and ethnicities. However, only one group was appointed ruler of each British and French mandated “new” countries at the expense of the other peoples’ living within these mandated country or national lines in the sand.. Israel was defined at the same time but it took time to develop as a country.

Let’s not leave out French-Indonesia/China? In the 16th Century through 1954 when it comes to occupation of other lands the French are a modern day example of this charge against Israel.

What about the Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, and German occupations and dividing of the Americas amongst themselves?

After WWI and the defeat of the Turks who aligned themselves with the Germans, the British- French mandates “CREATED” the States of Syria, Lebanon, Transjordan, Iraq/Iran (Mesopotamia) and seven other nations in Africa. This was done under what was called the League of Nations Mandate. USA was NOT a member. The French and British literally drew lines in the sand, mostly to their benefit, identifying the territory within these lines “as countries.” All of the territories subject to League of Nations mandates were previously controlled by states defeated in World War I, principally Imperial Germany and the Ottoman Empire

History word. Magnifier and puzzles.

Historical knowledge deleted: One of these post-WWI lines in the sand ran north and south along the Jordan River on the east and the Mediterranean Sea on the west. This land since bible times is called Palestine and designated by the same mandate as “Palestine,” the National Jewish homeland. This Jewish homeland is 1/630th the size of Arab territories established under these very same mandates defined as legal by the League of Nations and the Belfour Agreement. Just like each territorial mandate, people of mixed races, tribes, and religions lived within them. In each case and at the expense of the mix of people, ONE was selected the governing body. All but one, that being Palestine, were Arab-Muslims.

USA is a territory; Americans are a mix of people. Palestine is a territory. Palestinians are ANYONE living within Palestine todays Israel, just as anyone living in the USA is considered to be American. Jews of Israel are original Palestinians. See The Covenant of the League of Nations; Article 22. This has been true since 1456 B.C.; 3456 years ago.

Power Point Presentation for Chapter 16

Dr. jStarkIt is difficult to write on something that so many other scholars and want-to-be teachers have already covered in so many different formats. The FACTS don’t change. Bible content is something that cannot be copyrighted. Just like the free will of man to accept or deny the existence of a God supreme, it cannot be outlawed. Simple example in America: To pass a law about discrimination in any form does not eliminate it. This country (2016) is more polarized today than it was just 8 years ago. We can probably go back to the Civil War and see very similar hate, choosing of sides, difference of opinion in neighborhoods and a cluster of houses in a common section of almost any town feeling they are not a neighborhood-in-common.

I state the above as we close in on the end of our Revelation study. This is precisely what the Apostle John and many other bible prophets and authors of books in the bible have said for 3,000 years. They go into much greater detail, but without knowledge, how can one prepare for End Time? Simple answer… they can’t! This however does not mean End Time will also not come. It simply means that millions will lose his or her opportunity to survive it and spend eternity in a much more preferred place than hell.

Revelation 16

A voice from out of the heavenly temple commands the 7 angels to “go their way and pour out the vials of God’s wrath upon the earth and mankind”. Note that John hears the command that all 7 angels are told to GO! Not go #1; then go #2 and so forth. There is an order or sequence but no timing is evidenced. Since all 7 are told to go with ONE COMMAND, it is highly unlikely that there is a span of much, if any time between the pouring out of the wrath bowls of God. [suggested insight follows later]

The sequence is as follows:

  1. Bowl #1 is great sores upon man (and woman) if they have worshiped the beast, his image or taken the mark of the beast.
  2. *Bowl #2 is God’s wrath on the sea. We are not told if this includes lakes, ponds, or oceans. The Greek word used here is Thalassa. Thayer and Strong point out that this is a term usually indicating the Red or Mediterranean Seas. Since Thalassa is a prolonged form of halce, which means “salt” it would be unwise to conclude it does not include the great oceans and gulfs.
  3. *Bowl #3 is when and where the rivers, streams, springs are included in God’s wrath. The third angel pours out his bowl upon these waters.

*a word of caution… some bible translations say “the waters turned to blood like a dead man.” Young’s Literal Translation from 1898 says “blood.” We do not know if this analogy is a comparison of similarities or the actual thing. It is not important to know which as all translations worth any study say that all living creatures within these waters die.

At this point there is a short interlude as an angel “in charge of the waters” points out (v5) that God is justified in doing this to his creation. He explains that man has shed the blood of God’s followers and “deserves” the same treatment. Then in verse 7 a voice from the alter seconds this proclamation made by the angel of the waters. The obvious…this is at the end of the Great Tribulation Period of 7 years.

We might also note that the first three bowls of judgement are similar to judgements one and six cast on Egypt at the time of the Israeli bondage in that country. Even though these Egyptian plagues were limited to Egypt, we do know what these “plagues” were limited to in durations. This may only be studied speculation, but it gives us some insight as to the possible duration of each plague in Revelation: The first Egyptian plague lasted for 7 days (Ex 7:25), the 9th Egyptian plague lasted for 3 days (Ex 10:21-23), and the 10th was for one night, beginning at midnight (Ex 12:29-31); all within a given week. This may be helpful to those who want a duration number or some possibilities given for the plagues in Revelation. For some reasonable speculation on days of duration, go to http://www.jesusalive.cc/ques219.htm.scorchingsun

  1. Bowl #4 is the sun scorching those on earth (this does not include anyone who has not worshiped the beast, his image, and/or taken the mark of the beast. One must speculate that the turning of waters into a blood-like substance is not a permanent plague. Mankind would die after a few days of no water. Add the 4th plague of a scorching sun to no available water and mankind would fall like flies in a very short period of time.

We hasten to add another note for the reader. Verse 9 states flat out that men cursed God and refuse to repent or recognize Him for who and what He was, is, (and at this point in Revelation) is to very soon come. It appears there is room for men to repent or at least give God recognition for who He is. Not to keep adding Greek to this blog, but sometimes it helps our understanding of scripture. The word “repent” in verse 9 is metanoeō in the Greek. This means to “change one’s mind.” However, we must recall what Revelation 14:9-11 states. If someone repents at this point, it could be suggested that their eternal punishment from the “books that will be opened” [Revelation 2012] could be lessened. However, changing one’s mind does not mean changing one’s heart. One can begrudgingly accept a previously denied fact but still not embrace it.

  1. This is a turning point for Satan, the beast, and his false prophet. Up to this point the false trinity may have escaped the plagues on earth and man. But, plague #5 is pointed… God’s wrath is turned upon the kingdom of the beast. There will be total darkness and an unspecified pain poured out on the throne of the beast and his kingdom. People will finally see that the false-god isn’t even able to prevent or immunize itself against these judgments. What a Day That Will Be!
  2. Now to set the possible stage for the fulfillment of Plague or curse #6. We have the angel of vial #6 drying up the Euphrates. We know that this is already happening. Type drying of the Euphrates River into your search engine and read it from secular sources. There are multiple events happening at this time. Let’s briefly look at a few of them.dryingupriver
    1. Water has by now become very scarce due to the plagues. It may even replace the demand for oil by that time. There already is and has been a short supply of drining water in the Middle East; even during the time of Jacob.
    2. Putin and Netanyahu have recently agreed to a joint venture in developing oil and gas reserves found in Israel.
    3. The most recent world class oil reserve has been found in Har Megiddo; i.e. Armageddon territory; 55 miles north of Jerusalem.
    4. When oil reserves are threatened, armies converge to protect or steal it.. Examples? The Kuwaiti war with Saddam; Iraqi War; WWII… *(See the asterisk paragraph below)
    5. When water becomes totally scarce the Aswan Dam in Egypt will become a terrorist target. If breached or destroyed, this will fulfill the prophecy of Ezekiel 29:9.
    6. The dams in Jordan, Russia, Syria, Turkey…; King Hussein of Jordan has said “the volatile issue of water could drive the region to war. (See Matthew 24:22)
    7. UN Secretary-General Bhoutros-Ghali, while he was still Egypt’s foreign minister, said, “The next war in the Middle East will be fought over water, not politics.”
    8. Ironic as it may sound, the Persians defeated the Babylonians by diverting and drying up the river waters to Babylon back in 539 B.C.. Is this a preview of the fall of the Revelation Babylon???

*There needs to be something that calls these armies together at Har Megiddo; 55 miles north of Jerusalem. We are not without strong compelling attractions to this Valley of Jezreel in northern Israel AKA, Har Megiddo. Here are a few:

  1. Daniel 11 prophecies battles between the King of the North (probably the anti-Christ) and the king of the South (probably Muslim nations who refuse the anti-Christ as their master.) In their final battle they meet at Har Megiddo.
  2. In order to protect its oil rights in Israel and as agreed upon between Putin and Netanyahu (2016), Russia marches in to fend off destruction of their oil rights only recently discovered. See Daniel 11:44.
  3. A dry Euphrates River allows the king(s) of the East cross over and to get into the battle to either prevent a mutual destruction or to make sure it gets its fair-share of booty after the fight (war)
  4. Why would they gather to do battle? Revelation 16:13; it is all God arranged.

Plague #7:

Cataclysmic events such as islands disappear, mountains collapse and are no more, Jerusalem rises up to a high altitude as the waters from under soon-to-be Throne of God in Jerusalem begin to flow both toward the Jordan River and to the Mediterranean Sea. Jesus Christ sets foot on the Mount of Olives east of Jerusalem. Zechariah (14) tells us that the place of Jesus’ return to earth will not be Zion, Illinois, but the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, Israel. The city of Jerusalem is divided into three parts. The armies gathered in plague #6 march on Jerusalem and are judged by Jesus. Babylon the Great, city or an institutional power, is destroyed as announced by an angel in Revelation 14:8 and again in Revelation 18:21. Great and fiery hail falls from the heavens. This hail from heaven has similarities to the Exodus account of plague #7 on Egypt recorded in Exodus 19:13-35. Is it a coincident for us to overlook the fact that this hail in Revelation is plague #7, just as it was in Egypt; i.e. #7?

Much of these plague events and event to follow occur simultaneously and/or in rapid succession. These events continue to be recorded by John in the next couple of chapters in Revelation.

Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse and his army [Revelation 19:19; NIV]
